Collaboration, Movement, and Meaning.

Before I started college, I never gave much thought to how we communicate through movement. Really, I never gave much thought to how we communicate. As I worked my way through my first four years of university, that became the central focus of all of my work. I sought out classes within my degree program and outside of it that approached the incredibly nuanced process of sharing meaning with other people.

My major was interpretation, where I learned American Sign Language (ASL) and the task of interpreting between it and English. I took Spanish classes, I took German classes, I took linguistics classes, I took anthropology classes, I took writing classes, and I took speech communication classes. In my graduate program I have taken rhetoric and writing classes, philosophy classes, and applied communication studies classes. I have studied many ways through which we communicate with movement. Turns out, there is somewhere I forgot to look.

So, you're in grad school? What are you doing, even?!

Through a number of interactions with family and friends over the last several months, it has come to my attention that the vast majority of people I know have no idea what I'm doing in grad school. So, I've decided to write up an entry about that.

Linguists Have the Coolest Jobs Ever

A lot of people (sometimes, even those of us studying it) are unsure about what kind of employment can result from the study of linguistics. With graduation in two semesters and me being so unsure about doctoral school at the moment, I decided I should check out a few alternatives. So this week I've spent a lot of time looking at linguistics-related jobs. In this search, I've affirmed that I'm definitely on the right track for my interests. I'm pretty much where I need to be, studying pretty much what I need to study (I say "pretty much" because I could certainly be a bit better situated in an actual linguistics program, but let's not nitpick... ^_^).

The Minstrel's Prayer: A Look at Rhetoric in Cartel's Lyrics

So, this will be my first foray into looking at the connection between music and rhetoric. I’ve enjoyed pondering over this particular piece for the last couple of weeks, so I doubt this will be my last foray. This is not my academic writing, so it may not be as clean, crisp, and clear as some of my other pieces you may have read. That’s ok. Get in it, get messy, muddle through these lyrics with me.

Canons of Rhetoric: Audience?

Below is a Prezi that I made from a paper I wrote arguing for the inclusion of audience as a canon of rhetoric. I argue for this inclusion because the audience of a piece informs the other canons so strongly. This was an informal project and some of the writing is not purely academic. :)

Just click on "Start Prezi" and then use the arrows that show up on the bottom of the screen to navigate through.
