Published!

I got published! How tremendously exciting! For a twenty-two year-old master's student, being told that your article is published is a pretty mountain-top experience!

So here's the skinny:
Title: "Sociolinguistic Variation in the American Black Deaf Community: An Introduction to the Status of Past and Current Research"
Jounral: Journal of Undergradaute Interpreting Studies
Access: http://www.northeastern.edu/juis/journal/2012issue/
UALR News Story: http://ualr.edu/www/2012/11/05/journal-to-publish-undergrads-research/

Here's the chunky:
I started working on this project as an undergraduate student in 2010 with Dr. Glenn Anderson. The project has faded and returned, faded and returned to my focus over the last couple of years as time allowed. Finally completed in 2011, I presented at the UALR Undergraduate Research Expo, where I was awarded first place in the Professional Studies and Education category.

After that, I wasn't sure what to do with the project. I didn't quite feel like it had run it's total course, but I didn't know what kind of life was left in it. Then, in 2012 my program coordinator from my undergraduate program sent me a message about a new journal that the National Interpreter Education Center was starting: the Journal of Undergraduate Interpreting Studies.

So I submitted a manuscript, and after my first bout with the long and daunting process of peer-review and revision, I'm published!

This whole project has been an incredible experience. I've gained a lot of understanding and respect for the process of peer-reviewed publishing. This project has brought me into contact with a ton of people that I probably would not have met otherwise, has pushed what I thought were my limits, and has resulted in one of the moments in my life thus far of which I am most proud. If you are at all interested in sociolinguistics in sign language communities, I hope that you will invest in reading my article and continue the discussion of it with me.

Warm regards,

Clint Brockway
